I visited Lanier High School today, and I had a wonderful time there! The students were very respectful and seemed generally interested in my presentation. We discussed the writing process, getting published, and our book Rowan of the Wood. I had several great questions from the students and teachers, alike!

Special thanks to librarian Stella Farris for her awesome preparation! Her students knew we were coming, knew who we were & why we were there, and were very attentive thanks to her great efforts. Stella even gave us gift bags with goodies! We’ll definitely be returning to Lanier High School whenever they’ll have us back! I think Stella took some pictures, so I’ll be posting them up here when I get a copy.

For other schools interested in brining authors in for school visits, please see Authors in Schools, a great resource site with information on how to best prepare for an author visit. Here is another nice site on authors, listing authors by state. Whereas most authors charge for a visit, at this time, we’re doing them for free! We’d like to be able to sell our books there in lieu of an appearance fee, but that is not necessary if it’s against your district’s policy. Please contact me if you’re interested in having us talk to your class!

I hope to see some students from both Lanier High School and Gus Garcia Middle School at the BookPeople opening on Saturday!

Go Vikings!!

Round Rock Leader article September 25, 2008

This week’s Round Rock Leader ran a cover story about Rowan of the Wood and its two authors Christine & Ethan Rose.

Article:

Round Rock couple teams up on book

by MARCIAL GUAJARDO
Managing Editor

A look at the cover of “Rowan of the Wood” reminds some of Harry Potter. Pictured is a little boy wearing wire-rimmed, round glasses, his wavy hair a bit tussled. In back of him, a wizard waves a wand, magic imagined electricity-like, twisting into a curl at the top of the page. Evil appears to lurk nearby, in the woods behind the boy and wizard.Authors Christine and Ethan Rose, a Round Rock couple, readily admit their first book will undoubtedly draw Potter comparisons. However, they are also quick to point out the lead character, Cullen, can moreso be traced back to one of its creators – Ethan.
Cullen is loosely based on Ethan, who grew up in foster care, spending much time walking through California’s Redwood Forest with a book in his hand.
Ethan spent much time in among nature recently, but this time writing instead of reading. After Christine hammered out the rough draft for “Rowan” in 30 days, Ethan took over, grabbing his pencil and clipboard and heading for the hiking trails to edit, elaborate upon her work and develop minor characters while hiking.

“He has to be among the trees to write,” Christine said. “He gets a lot of his inspiration from nature.”

After about three years in the making – including about eight months of writing – “Rowan” is set for national distribution in November. First, it will be released in Texas on Oct. 18 by Austin-based Dalton Publishing.

The teaming of husband and wife amazes others the Roses have talked to about the book, eliciting comments, Christine said, such as “And you’re still together!”

But, even though it is their first book, Christine holds a master’s degree in medieval/ Renaissance literature and folklore, while Ethan has read “every fantasy novel ever written,” Christine noted.

“Every good one,” Ethan clarified, drawing smiles from both of them.

“It worked amazingly well,” added Christine, an adjunct professor at Austin Community College, about her first-time collaboration with her husband, a general contractor. “It was really wonderful and fun.”

“Rowan of the Wood” mixes fantasy and adventure in a tale focused on Cullen, a 12-year-old misfit with a horrible foster family. Walking through the woods to escape life at home and school, Cullen one day stumbles across a strange stick floating above the ground.

He later learns the stick is a wand belonging to a wizard, Rowan, long ago destined to become a druidic priest of an ancient Scottish tribe. On his wedding day – Halloween – Rowan and his wife faced attack from a fierce enemy bent on decimating the tribe.

The tribe, unarmed during the wedding, fled through a passageway to another world, which according to Scottish lore, becomes most easily accessible on Halloween. But Rowan got left behind, and he hid within the wand to escape slaughter.

Cullen inadvertently frees Rowan from the wand but later blacks out. Rowan possesses Cullen and is able to draw himself out of the boy’s body when Cullen become scared.

The plot for “Rowan” came to Christine on a flight from Texas to Oregon in 2005. Inspired by her young nephews, Christine – who has dabbled in film production, creating two political documentaries – toyed with the idea of writing a book and wondered what would appeal to a wide audience.

She noticed the effect sci-fi fantasy and adventure, as well as longtime comic book superheroes such as Superman and Batman, had on her two nephews, no more than 5 years old at the time.

“I had just spent Christmas with my nephews,” she said. “I saw how these kids got into these things that we got into. I just started thinking of the elements of these different stories [and] characters and tried to find something similar.”

After Christine’s initial idea – the outline was scribbled on several air sickness bags – another year passed before she began writing the story. On breaks at her former job, she began writing.

Christine purchased a book on how to write a book in 30 days, and she followed through, finishing the first draft in a month. Ethan spent time among the trees near Gattis School Road, Lake Georgetown and in city of Austin parks, meshing out details of the book. Last summer, Ethan was again among the redwoods during a trip to California, working on the book’s sequel.

In January, Dalton picked up “Rowan.”

The couple now hopes the book and the sequel will allow Ethan to spend less time on rooftops in his 9 to 5 role and more time among the trees.

“It’s been positive,” said Ethan, who operates Ethan Rose Construction of Round Rock. “I enjoy writing. I wish I had more time for it.”

With “Rowan” going nationwide, chances are Ethan just may have more time for that.

We did our first reading last night at BookPeople in Austin. It was really great! We were the “opening act” for author Robert Stikmanz, another Dalton Publishing author. We had a nice response to our little presentation, and a few people came up to us and told us they were very interested in our book! :-D

On the art front, after a very stressful week … I’m taking a break with an “Art Day.” With so many things on my plate at any given time, I find that it’s best to concentrate on one thing at a time. So today is primarily an “Art Day.” The last two days were PR days. And then Sunday & Monday I worked on the Book Trailer(s). They will be posted on YouTube shortly.

I’m finding more and more how much I enjoy creating my little Green Men and Celtic art. Although we didn’t get TRF, we will be doing many smaller Renfaires and Celtic Festivals. It’s actually much better this way, as we’ll reach a broader market.

Here is my latest creation:

Tree Man, Acrylic

I started by using a decoupage technique with pages from our first test printed of Rowan of the Wood. I aged them with diluted woodstain. Then, I used acrylic paints to create the image of the “Tree Man.” I haven’t painted in years, so this was fun. I really like the finished look. I’m working on a few more today.

I’m also going to use my new scroll saw and take another stab at a celtic wood carving.  Hopefully I’ll have more pictures to share after my relaxing “Art Day.”

It’s been a whirlwind over the past 6 weeks. After my unplanned and mournful trip to Ohio, I was thrown directly into a Summer Session Composition II class at ACC (I’m an Adjunct English Professor there) and a Prof. Development class which I was taking. That, along with Ethan’s 40th birthday celebration, my dad’s visit, my cousin’s visit, hiring an awesome publicist (Mary Reed) — and trying to keep up with everyday work. I didn’t have time to breathe… so, no art! And, boy, did I miss it!

So now the Summer Session is over, and I have three weeks until my Fall class begins. Now it’s time for promotional scheduling, business stuff, and ART. Here’s what’s completed:

I’ve been doing some new finishes. Here you see mostly washes or a mixture of washes and metallic paints to give it an aged look. We also have one stone one, top center. I particularly like the silvery ones. It’s a black wash with silver highlights. It’s a nice effect that looks like tarnished pewter.

Next are examples of my Green Man #2 – original design. You saw the original clay & latex mold in an earier blog. Here are some similar finishes. These are great because you can hang them from the curved stem. I also put magnets on the back to make a beautiful refrigerator magnet.

The above are casts I’ve made from manufactured molds (not my original design). The outdoor ones are cast in concrete (all available aren’t pictured) and mostly finished with an outdoor sealant paint wash. I think they’re quite nice. They’re made to either hang or use as a garden accent. Above those are some more indoor plaster casts with the various finishes.

These are my Green Man wood carvings. I think they’re coming out quite nicely. I’ve also got a scroll saw to do some intricate celtic cutout carvings, but I split my first attempt. I hope to try for another one later today.

Fuzzy picture, but these are our hand carved wizards, made by both me and Ethan. We plan to either give these away for free at RenFaires (if we have enough) or at least free with purchase. Ethan doesn’t amazing work, as he has years of experience whittling. I should put up some of Ethan’s hand carved magic wands. They’re gorgeous!!

This is my latest creation. I rather like it! It’s decoupaged pages from our book in the background and an aged, mosscovered, Green Man cast on top. I might be making more of these! I’m working on another one that will hopefully look like it’s on top of a stone with moss growing around and through it. Hope to show you soon!

I also start work on the Book Trailer this weekend! Look for it on You Tube shortly under my new channel “TheTuberRose,” which I created exclusively for Rowan related videos.

Okay. I have good news and bad news.

The bad news is the release date for Rowan of the Wood has been pushed back until October 18th.

The good news is …. well, there is a lot of good news!

The main reason for the pushed back release date is because the distributor wanted more time to pitch the book because they think it’s going to be a “big hit.” Yippeeee!!

It’s also really cool that it’s October, since the book takes place around Halloween (Samhain). The new release party at BookPeople will be on October 18th. Time TBA.

Serindipitously, a few days after the release date was officially changed, the publisher got a call from Austin Monthly Magazine who was looking for a book being released in October to feature that “has something to do with Halloween and the supernatural.” …. I mean…. really?!?!?!?

Twenty minutes later, I received word that Austin Monthly Magazine chose Rowan of the Wood as their featured book for the October issue. YIPPEEEEEE again! Ethan and I have an interview with Austin Monthly scheduled this week. Our first interview for the book!

Furthermore, we’ll still be appearing at ArmadilloCon in August, and we will have books available to buy before the official release. We’ll also still be doing MiddleFaire in Hillsboro toward the end of Sept/beginning of October — and, with any luck, the Texas Renaissance Festival. We should get word from them in another two weeks or so.

Oh… and the final cover was accepted by our publisher today. Thanks Ia for your extra work in making this cover work for everyone! It’s an AWESOME cover!

I’m writing this from my birthplace in Parma, Ohio. Just hours after my last post, I learned that my last living grandmother had unexpectedly died. She couldn’t have felt any pain. She was perfectly healthy at 93. One son, my dad, stopped by at noon to visit, and she was fine. Another son came by at 4pm to take her to church, and they found her already gone. So sudden… the following 24 hrs was a whirlwind of phone calls, memories, travel planning, and insanity preparation. I’ve been here since Tuesday. I’ll be here until the 1st.

Talk about a whirlwind of memories. My sister and I would visit Ohio every summer growing up. There are moments in Rowan of the Wood taken directly from our experience in Parma, like chasing the fireflies barefoot on a perfect lawn. When Max remembers listening to the rain in the open garage with her father — is also straight out of my past. I still think of my dad every time it rains. The loss of someone dear coupled with the reemergence of long forgotten, almost-surreal memories puts my current life into a bizarre new perspective. Talk about middle age!

While running the spyware and defrag programs on my dad’s computer (as I’m the family’s resident computer guru because I know something about computers), I checked my email. I don’t know what I’d do without my iPhone for daily checking and internet fix, but nothing replaces a good desktop… anyways, waiting there was a message from our publisher.

The national release of Rowan of the Wood has been pushed back until October, which is surprisingly fine with me! The original release was supposed to be LAST October (2007), but we’re glad we held out for a publisher… and I think it will be worth the wait. Since the book takes place at the end of October, I think it’s a perfect time. The reason for the delay is our publisher’s new national distributor Midpoint Trade Books. They want time to pitch it to the libraries and chains because “they think it’s going to be a big hit.” !!! Great news! … and hope for the future.

Life is a strange thing.

We’ll still have a regional (Austin area) release beginning with the BookPeople Release Party on August 2nd @ 3pm. JOIN US!

I got the final Galley PDF today! Yipee!! We’re that much closer to seeing this published! They’re going out to the major reviewers next week.

The galleys are a bit late, but we’ll still have the opening at BookPeople, even though the official release date has been pushed to September. Deltina at Dalton is going to the Book Expo America at the end of the month, and “Rowan” will have a presence there — even in its pre-published state.

I’ve been interviewing publicists, and we hope to hire one in June. It’s down to two. They’ll be sending in their proposals over the coming weeks.

We’re getting our Author Pictures taken this weekend for the book jacket. I’ll post some when I’ve got them. I don’t photograph well, usually — and the pictures that I look great in don’t really look like me in person. So hopefully these pictures will both look like me and look good. Ethan is always adorable, so he doesn’t have to worry.
