“I am a happy camper so I guess I’m doing something right. Happiness is like a butterfly; the more you chase it, the more it will elude you, but if you turn your attention to other things, it will come and sit softly on your shoulder…” – Henry David Thoreau

“Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic. Authenticity is invaluable; originality is nonexistent. And don’t bother concealing your thievery—celebrate it if you feel like it. In any case, always remember what Jean-Luc Godard said: “It’s not where you take things from—it’s where you take them to.” – Jim Jarmusch

“The public have an insatiable curiosity to know everything. Except what is worth knowing. Journalism, conscious of this, and having tradesman-like habits, supplies their demands.” – Oscar Wilde

“The best things in life aren’t things.” – Unknown

“In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act.” – George Orwell

“Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.” – George Bernard Shaw

“Imagination is more important than knowledge.”- Albert Einstein

What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us. – Ralph Waldo Emerson

There are two ways of spreading light-
To be the candle or the mirror that reflects it. – Edith Wharton

In three words I can sum up everything I’ve learned about life.
It goes on. – Robert Frost

Every day I learn more and more about Web 2.0 Social Media… but it’s always more than I can handle or comprehend. Truly. It’s overwhelming. Here are a few things that have helped me make things a bit simpler.

  1. TWITTER! – I’m all about Twitter. Micro-blogging. Networking. Keeping up with Friends. It’s all about Twitter! Check out my top 10 Twitter Resources.
  2. Widgetbox: I LOVE WIDGETS – they make updating several sites so much easier! Many Social Media/Networking sites have widgets of their own (like Twitter, Facebook, TwitPics, Flicr, Goodreads, and many more), but not all of them work on all sites. For example, MySpace doesn’t like scripted code, so many widgets won’t work. On Widgetbox, you can make a widget through any RSS and then tailor it for whichever site it will appear!
  3. Ping.fm: a simple service that makes updating your social networks a snap. (Another way to update many sites at once.)
  4. Popurls: Popular URLs to the latest web buzz. Stay on the hot topic with Popurls.
  5. FriendFeed: A way to keep track of several Social Media sites all at once.
  6. blogTV & also get ManyCam to spruce up your broadcasts
  7. http://www.slide.com/guest_arrange?bc=0&fx=0&tt=1&sk=0&cy=bb&th=0&sc=0 Make a Virtual Guestbook!
  8. SocialMarker – ability to update several social networking sites at once. WHAT A LIFESAVER! Although I don’t totally “get” the Social Bookmarking thing… I’m slowly learning. It’s just so time consuming with everthing else I need to do everyday. This tool makes submitting sites to places like StumbleUpon and Digg much easier.
  9. BlogTalkRadio – host your own radio show online. Check mine out on Wednesday nights. I’m just getting into this, so stay tuned for more comments on this.
  10. YouTube (of course) last, but certainly not least – two new “On the Road…” vlogs every week!

I’m holding my opinion back on OpenID. It’s supposed to make things better and easier by just using one sign-in, but I have yet to get it to work. Perhaps I just haven’t found the time to truly explore it properly.

I’ve been nominated for The Statesman’s Texas Social Media Awards. Please go here and comment on my profile. http://budurl.com/nominees – Help me make the top 25 of the state!! :-D

If you’re anything like me, a pushing-middle-aged, fairly techno-saavy internet junkie trying to wade through the over abundance of information on the web, then you will appreciate top ten lists as much as I do.

Each day when I stumble into my office, still sleepy-eyed and waiting for my coffee to brew, I’m faced with trying to be seen among the other hundreds of millions of people on the internet. It was recently reported that there are over 900 million blogs!!! I’m overwhelmed daily by the information at my fingertips, and it’s all too easy to fall down the time wasting rabbit hole, jumping from hyperlink to hyperlink ending up on a completely different topic from whence you began.

“Focus, Christine,” I tell myself as I reheat my coffee, “if you’re going to get anything done you have to focus.” BUT THERE IS SO MUCH!! I pull at my still unstyled hair and sit back down to stare at the computer screen. The best thing about broadcasting on blogTV… I have to get out of my PJs and fix my hair!

So for your sanity as well as my own, I’m compiling top ten(ish) lists on different subjects dealing with the all-consuming web 2.0. It’s sort of like my own private del.icio.us on my own private blog (because I STILL haven’t figured out how to effectively use del.icio.us, Stumble Upon, OR Facebook!)… but I keep learning and swimming through the unending information racing across my cable line, and I hope you will keep learning with me. We’ll help keep each other afloat.

Before I start the list, I want to showcase this post: What Makes Great Blogging?
It’s the single-most helpful post on blogging that I’ve ever read!

  1. Jiglu: Tags That Think - Jiglu is a super-smart engine that pieces sites together, intelligently tagging and linking all your content. I totally don’t understand this at all, but it looks like it could be really helpful! Any tips on how to use this resource?
  2. 10 Blogging Myths Debunked
  3. Click Newz – The entire site, but this link goes to Social Marketing Pitfalls: how to ensure you’re not just wasting your time, which I do quite a lot of!! … but I’m getting better!
  4. Marketing In A Web 2.0 World - covering some of the basics like YouTube, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.
  5. Why Facebook? – I’ve had a Facebook account for well over two years now, and I still don’t understand how to fully utilize it.
  6. Top 10 Sinfully Good Social Media Marketing Diva Blogs - Check out some divas who are doing it right!
  7. Web Success Diva (Your Friendly Social Internet Marketing Super Girl) – this has a wealth of resources and information, which of course, will lead to more information! <pulling at hair again>
  8. Jump on the Social Media Bandwagon Jump on? I’ve been on the wagon for years, and it’s still all too much to process! This post addresses some of the basics as well.
  9. 3 Simple Steps to Impact your Niche on Twitter in 60 Days I am a TwitterFiend! I LOVE Twitter! I Tweet all day long. I Tweet from remote locations via my iPhone. I send TwitPics, etc… there are so many resources attached just to Twitter, I have another post just for Twitter Top Tens!!
  10. Want a Popular Blog? Put Your Ego Aside. Too late for this one, it’s already name based rather than content based, but it is an author site as well as a blog. Still, this post has some great ideas!

Throughout my research, I keep hearing the word “BRANDING.” It was never clear to me what this even meant until I saw this blog: Branding 101: How to Promote Your Blog Like the Big Boys Do

Since I’ve discovered Twitter, my eyes have become even more sunken from staring at the computer screen. Because, even when I’m not in my home office working online, I’m Tweeting from a car while stopped at a traffic light or Tweeting in the middle of a conversation. I Tweet while I watch TV. One of the first things I think of when I notice something beautiful or see something funny is ‘I have to Tweet this!’

I’m a total junkie.

Now there is an entirely new source of over-information in the form of Tweets! And then there are sites on top of sites that are just resources to use along with Twitter (and blogs dedicated to using Twitter)… and the list goes on…

Twitter makes me feel more connected. Twitter makes me feel less alone. Twitter challenges me to learn new things. Twitter helps me keep up with world events when I feel like I’m drowning in cyberspace. Twitter inspires me to write better blogs. Twitter makes me more _______! (Great blog post with many Tweets responding and filling in the blank).

So far, here are the top 10 Twitter resources I’ve collected.

  1. Tweet Adder – This amazing program not only helps you build your Twitter following by finding targeted, like-minded followers, it will also assist you in the marketing portion of your tweets. Mass follow/unfollow. Recurring tweets. Utilize it to promote your brand, books, services, etc. But remember, although Twitter is a great marketing tool, you can’t *just* self promote or people won’t follow you. Your tweets must be mixed with RTs, personal updates, and participating in the community.
  2. TweetDeck: Keep track of all your Tweets on this fancy dashboard. You can even monitor more than one twitter account and schedule future tweets. I use this daily.
  3. 181 Free Twitter Buttons (etc) – A post on the greatest Twitter blog I’ve found (TwiTip) about little buttons and widgets you can post on your blog, MySpace, Facebook, etc… one not listed is the one that I use from Korelab (lovingly ripped off from John Cleese’s site). Look down on the right sidebar of this blog to see it.
  4. Tweetmeme – View the most popular Twitter threads occurring now. I’m not quite sure about the benefit of this site – perhaps to see the most popular topics or trends in Twitter, like the next one:
  5. Twist: See Trends in Twitter – searchable by keyword, shows graph and then recent posts. Pretty cool.
  6. Twitt(url)y: Real Time Link Tracking on Twitter. What people are talking about NOW, in real time.
  7. Future Tweets – You can even set Tweets to post in the future while you’re away. Pretty fricken cool! (I think they no longer do this – 7/28)
  8. Twitterholic: Top Twits by followers
  9. TwitterFeed: Feed your blog on Twitter
  10. TweetVolume: See how often certain words/phrases appear on Twitter

And here are my top 10 Twitter “top 10″ (ish) blogs.
