So. It’s the end of 2009.
Praise be.

The end of a grossly unprofitable and highly disappointing year. Good Riddance.

We are so far from the NYT bestseller list, that we’re not even on the same planet.
So much for lofty goals.

We couldn’t get media coverage to save our lives. Even with the GGC in tow.

We spent about 45% more on marketing than we earned in book sales.

We were threatened with foreclosure, weren’t sure how we were going to pay our bills, and had more than one emotional (and financial) set back on the personal front.

Still… on the bright side…

Ethan, Oreo, & Star in the GGCOverall, this year was a lot of fun! I got to spend nearly all of it with my entire little family: Ethan, the “girls,” and Shadow, the cat.

We drove from one end of the continent to the other in the Geekalicious Gypsy Caravan at least three times, traveling well over 6,000 miles on the book tour.

We met some incredible people. Saw this beautiful country. Visited family & friends. Got some super book reviews. Won two awards. Found some wonderful fans. Touched more than a few people with our books. Experienced joys and sorrows, both personal and professional.

We’ve sold nearly 4,000 books, no small feat for first time authors with an unknown independent publisher and no marketing budget. Ethan @ B&NEspecially considering that the average book released in the US sells 500 copies in it’s lifetime. This was just in the first year for Rowan of the Wood.

And now, we have the sequel out: Witch on the Water. Many fans have said they like it better than Rowan. Ethan @ Crazy Horse in South DakotaI’d like to think we learned a thing or two about writing along the way, so that’s good news.

The bad news is… I’m exhausted. I hit my ceiling for tolerance and hope around November 1st, and I’ve been recovering every since.

For 2010… we have a new plan. We won’t be traveling as much Christine in the Redwood Forest, CA(I don’t even want to mention the amount we spent in gasoline… and here I am an anti-oil/war environmentalist. It’s embarrassing), but we’ll still be doing some choice events.

We’ll be focusing on what works and trying out some new things, but I’m unlikely to be the marketing whirlwind I was last year. Ethan & Christine shadows on the Salt Flats in UTUnless amazing something tips that gives me a second wind. Like a movie deal :-D (starring Kevin McKidd as Rowan!)

We’ll be sticking closer to home out of necessity and staying off the computer more. (Yeah! Like that will happen!– actually, I have been keeping away from social networking sites in comparison to the Christine @ Niagra Fallspre-October frenzy.)

Living more.

Writing more.

Reading more.

Ethan @ Badlands Natl Park, SDAnd…helping others more. Authors. Kids. Animals. Plants. Whoever needs helping.

Fewer videos. Fewer book signings. Fewer everything else.

Basically doing everything we did last year… minus the constant marketing.

Ethan in SeattleI won’t be making anymore lofty goals, and I’ll focus on being grateful and happy with what we have, whether that is barely a roof over our heads or some best-seller list. Try to be here. Which, is extremely difficult for me, as I’m obsessively goal-oriented. I’ll be trying to more more toward the process, honing my craft, making art-love-beauty.

Just living.

Enjoying right now.

Christine in St. Louis, MOAfter all we’re rich in LOVE. Heath. Happiness. Friends & Family. A home. We’re quite fortunate, especially with as hard as this year was on many, many, many, many people.

I feel like I’ve lost the last two years of my life to constant marketing.
And it’s so not worth it.

Just plain burnt out.

Life is too short. Too fragile to spend it always reaching to the future.
Time to enjoy now.

Perhaps I’ll write a book on that.

E&C with the GGCStill… it’s been a great ride! See you on the road in 2010 — look for the GGC!

… oh–

and…

BUY OUR BOOKS! :-D

On the drive down yesterday, I used my handy-dandy MiFi to get some work done on the 10-hour drive.

You know me, never a down moment without doing some kind of work. Although, I’m trying *very* hard to take a few days off during our unscheduled trip home. As I say that, I’m working on this blog and have the accounting program open in the background, ready to catch up on that.

But tomorrow. Definitely tomorrow. Rest, relax, and read.

Anyway – I digress!

Etsy! That’s right!

Several times over the past few months, people have asked if my artwork was available on Etsy. I didn’t know what it was, but I soon learned. It’s kinda like eBay for handmade and vintage items.

Cool.

I set up an Etsy account but didn’t take the time to populate it with items until yesterday. Now I have four items up for sale! Our Etsy page is at http://RowanOfTheWood.etsy.com. I will be putting more of both Ethan’s and my artwork up there as time marches on.

Etsy is pretty cool overall.

We arrived at the site for the Kansas City Renaissance Festival a day earlier than expected. It’s a good thing, too, because the booth we rented was in worse shape that we thought!

And that’s a gross understatement.

Whomever rented the booth last year courteously left all their trash and recycling for us to take care of. It was, of course, infested with ants, wasps, and other insects, having been vacant for a year. It’s painted this horrible blue, but then has huge spots that still had an older, more horrible blue that hadn’t been repainted with the new horrible blue!

Here’s a short video of us cleaning it all up.

I think I’ll video myself making a journal today, so that should be up for Video Tuesday!

We went into Seattle yesterday, and it was supposed to be a fun Twitter-connected experience. People from both Twitter and Facebook suggested places for us to go, and we went there! The plan was to Tweet these pictures all day long, so followers could follow our progress across the city.

Didn’t happen.

I guess Twitter was hacked yesterday… and it must’ve affected TwitPics because I couldn’t upload one of them.

It was really great that my iPhone Facebook app allows me to upload to Facebook, so they’re all there!

Ethan and I had a really great time, but we couldn’t take our time and spend all day there, as the dogs & cat were in the Geekalicious Gypsy Caravan back in Buckley. So it was a marathon sightseeing day. We did visit many of the places suggested.

Ethan at the Space NeedleWe didn’t get to have a micro-brewery beer & watch the ships go by… and that was something I really wanted to do! Sorry Gary! We couldn’t find how to get a beach before our patience for city traffic and parking were at an end.

Ethan’s brother Geahk suggested we go to the Science Fiction Museum, and we at least stood outside of it! He also suggested we go to the Monorail & Space Needle, which we did. We actually rode the Monorail the four whole blocks it travels. That was an $8 well spent! We didn’t make it to the Green Teapot for vegan fish or to Big “O” Donuts for organic donuts… but we might be heading back into Seattle next week, so there’s still time!

Me at the ArboretumMelanie suggested we eat some Veggie Shepherd’s Pie at Kells Irish Pub, but it turns out they don’t serveĀ  Veggie Shepherd’s Pie, and we didn’t make it to the Art Museum either. There is a picture of me in front of Kells, though! The entire “Seattle Day” photo album is on Facebook – go look!

Gary Warner Kent suggested the Old Seattle Underground, but our budget being what it is, we didn’t go — although it looks way cool! Same reason we didn’t go into the SciFi Museum. He also suggested we go to the Arboretum & the floating bridge, both of which we did do!

Me with Orgasmic Cheescake TrufflesI really wanted to visit the original Starbucks (thanks to the help of @MarnieBelle for telling us where to find it), which we did, and I got my favorite Venti Decaf Nonfat NoWhip Mocha. It was yummy! My cousin Catherine suggested we go to the The Confectional where they have cheesecake truffles. I had a Dark Chocolate Mochaccino & Ethan had a Rasberry Truffle. They were quite orgasmic. We also found the Freemont Troll (pictured at top) from her suggestion, but we didn’t get to any of the woodland parks.

Other Twitter suggestions from @booksliesalibies (Bimbo’s Bitchin’ Burrito Kitchen) & @NessieBeliever (roadside cherry stand) are still to be done! There’s a roadside cherry stand here in Buckley, so we’ll be going there soon to eat cherries and make a fun design with the pits. And the Bimbo’s Bitchin’ Burrito Kitchen is far too cool a name to NOT go there! We’ll find a way!

Don’t forget to look at all the pictures in the Perfect Seattle Day album on Facebook! Leave me some comments!

We're here! on TwitpicThis morning Christine and I took some time off from our hectic schedule to see the Devil’s tower, or as it has been known for hundreds of years before a Christianity-crazed pale face saw it, Bear Lodge.

Both names have merit depending on one’s point of view.

The monument does indeed look like a giant stump that an equally immense bear sharpened his claws on. According to legend a young boy was playing there with his seven sisters. As any young boy could tell you this was probably very maddening. I’m sure they ganged up to torment him because back then people had to make their own amusements. Tormenting siblings is one of the oldest amusements known to humanity.
When the boy couldn’t take any more he turned into a giant bear and started chasing them. The sisters climbed onto a tree stump which proceeded to grow and bore them up into the sky while the bear was left to score the bark from the stump in frustration. The sisters stayed up there and became the Big Dipper or Ursa Major which is interesting since the big bear stayed on the ground.

Geologically speaking the Devils Tower was formed by hot magma pushed up through the earths crust from the pits of hell. I suppose it could have been done by the devil if he was around fifty million years ago.
As the magma cooled it contracted, forming the distinctive columns. As the Aeons went by the surrounding countryside eroded away leaving the tower exposed to tourists and their cameras. I am not a geologist myself, but I did read the National Parks pamphlet about it and will take their word for it since we all know that the government never lies.

There is a paved path circling the base 1.3 miles long. It is a very nice walk, providing mild exercise and many magnificent views. Definitely check it out if you are ever in that part of Wyoming.

Well I seem to be falling behind on my event reviews, so let me quickly bring everyone up to date.

Old World Renaissance Faire in Twigg Minnesota gets five stars.

It was totally bad ass.

The people were very friendly, both administration and fellow vendors.

The site was magical! When the wind blew, cottonwood snow drifted through the air and hundreds of dragonflies darted through the glades like dancing fairies.

It was set within woodland glades. The crowds were not large, but business was good. Plenty of parking and plenty of great entertainment. Definitely worth returning next year.

Our next event was the Fort Collins Irish Festival. I can only give them four stars. Business was good, and the music was great. The people there were also very friendly. We had a beautiful spot beneath the protective shade of a lovely tree, and the weather couldn’t have been more perfect. We were able to park the Geekalicious Gypsy Caravan just two blocks down, right next to a park! It was perfect for the girls!

The festival lost a star for lack of convenience, however.

It was held in the center of town, which meant we couldn’t start setting up until after five on Friday when normal business was over for the day. We had a book signing that evening from six to eight so we couldn’t even begin setting up until nine, in the dark.

Teardown was even worse. We had to break down and pack up by six a.m. Monday morning. The event ended at ten pm. Again breaking down in the dark after a twelve hour day. We didn’t get to bed until after midnight.

But aside from that it was a great festival!

Less than a month until Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince is released into theatres! We actually don’t get out to the cinema much, but you better believe I’ll be seeing that on opening day (at least weekend). We’ll be just outside Denver when it opens.

Totally.

Still time to check out our PodioBook – Claim Your Chapter TODAY!

OH YEAH …. I really can’t wait!

Stay tuned to TheTuberRose for a fun Bellatrix sings Madonna video… coming soon!

We had a wonderful time at the Olde World Renaissance Faire last weekend in Twig, MN. It was a beautiful and magical faire. It was like we had truly passed over into the Otherworld. I wish I could’ve captured them on video! Hundreds of dragonflies (read fairies) zipped around through a misty forest. Truly magical.

I tried something new with the video. It’s a sort of montage of sights and sounds. Let me know if you like it or if you prefer the vlogs. . . or perhaps a mixture!

I hope to have one from the Celtic Festival in Ft. Collins on Tuesday for you.

Have a great day!

There are still chapters left to claim in our community audiobook project!

Yesterday you heard the facts of our police harrassment adventure from Ethan’s dry wit POV.

Today, it’s my turn to rant in my own way… of course, via video!
This was recorded right after the cops let us go.

Yes, it was an inconvenience, but I’m thankful that it wasn’t a lot worse.

Remember to claim your chapter in our community podiobook project for Rowan of the Wood!

Today was a better day at Scarborough Faire. I met another Twitter friend & sold a painting!! Yeah!

Now. Driving home.

Still tapping this out on my iPhone.

I’m totally getting MiFi this week!!
